The Adoption Process
The adoption process begins with an application to An Open Door Adoption Agency (downloadable from this web site) followed by home study, Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services application (USCIS)) and a relatively brief dossier. For most families, the process of completing this dossier is about four months. Open Door adoption consultants will guide you through the dossier process. Once the dossier is completed, a legalization process begins, before the dossier is sent to Peru. The Peruvian National Secretary of Adoption (NSA) then reviews and approves dossiers in one or two months for families adopting children over five years of age. After studying the adoption file, the couple enters a waiting list. The referral of a child will take about six to eight months. A referral will be sent to the family by our representative through the agency including photo, medical and description of the child.
This is an ideal program for families interested in adopting an older child or children. Length of time between referral and travel is short. Parents generally travel to Peru within two months of formally accepting the referral of their child. The child is selected for the family in accordance with the particular request the adoptive parents have made regarding the child they hope to adopt, although NSA could ask families to be flexible regarding the age of the child they hope to adopt.
